Titled The World’s Happiest Man in English, the film features a stellar cast, including Dayahang Rai, Anuradha Majumdar, Pooja Chand-Lama, Richa Ghimire, Joyes Pandey, Aditi Pyakurel, Tom Crain, Bimal Subedi, and Hollywood veteran Bruce Dern, who plays a special role.
This is Nepal’s first film made under the SAG-AFTRA framework, with contributions from Hollywood technicians as well.
Director Binod Poudel, known for his debut film Bulbul (2019), which was Nepal’s official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards, helms this project.
Bulbul also won him Nepal’s National Award for Best Director. Poudel states that Bhuthan is a film crafted for a global audience, carrying deep emotional weight that will resonate with viewers worldwide.
One of the film’s producers, Abeeral Thapa, has boldly claimed that Bhuthan will mark the “rebirth of Haribansha Acharya” on April 24, 2025. The movie’s distribution in Nepal will be handled by RR Films Production, while Buffalo 8, a Hollywood-based company, will oversee distribution in the USA and Canada, according to US-based producer Rajendra Thakuri.
The film explores the themes of patriotism, displacement, and identity, focusing on the struggles of Bhutanese people who were forced to leave their homeland and seek refuge in Nepal, India, and eventually settle in the United States. It portrays the emotional turmoil of losing one’s birthplace and the search for one’s roots.
The film boasts a strong technical team, including Sushan Prajapati (cinematography), Anjay Khadka (editing), Dikes Khadgi Shahi (sound), Surya Shahi (casting), Ujjwal Shrestha (publicity design), and Bimal Subedi (production design). The film’s art direction is led by Anjan Gajurel, a well-known Bollywood production designer. Additionally, Kirtana Banskota, Eli Bohora, Bishal Dotel, and Samundra Raj Ghimire have assisted in the direction.
Bhuthan is produced by Thakuri Brothers, Vacant Light, Everest Entertainment (USA), Nepal’s Awaken Productions, and Mad Monkey Films (USA).
