Bhimsen Thapa is a name in Nepal’s history that played a significant role in the political, social, and military changes of the country. The play, based on the epic poem Bhimsen Thapa written by the renowned poet Siddhicharan Shrestha, is now going to be staged on the theater stage. Directed by Sanam Kumar Bairag, the play will be presented in the UK first, followed by various cities in Nepal.

Bhimsen Thapa was Nepal’s first prime minister, who fought countless struggles for the protection and independence of the nation. His life was filled with political ups and downs, military wars, and personal struggles. Siddhicharan Shrestha attempted to highlight Bhimsen Thapa’s contribution through his epic poem Bhimsen Thapa.

Now, this literary work is coming to life on stage. The play is directed by the experienced director Sanam Kumar Bairag, who will also play the role of Bhimsen Thapa. Dil Ghale is the co-producer. Director Bairag, who was actively involved in the Nepali theater scene about four decades ago, now resides in London. He had directed the film Kaidiko Patra, which was released in Nepal as well. He has previously staged plays like Samay Drishya and Jigisha in the UK since 2016. Director Bairag mentioned that Bhimsen Thapa was previously staged in the UK and was successful, and it is now being restaged.

To make the play even more impactful, music has been given special importance. Famous composer Tara Prakash Limbu has provided the music, and the voice of Sapan Kumar Rai will be heard in the songs. The lyrics of the songs are written by Sanam Kumar Bairag. Dance coordination is also an important aspect of the play. Choreographer Charan Pradhan has directed the dance in a style that depicts the historical time period.

The play will be staged in both the UK and Nepal. In the UK, it will be staged from April 26 throughout May in various cities such as London, Reading, Woolwich, Aldershot, and Scotland. In Nepal, 15 consecutive shows will be held at Mandala Theatre in Kathmandu after the upcoming Dashain and Tihar festivals. After the Kathmandu performances, the play will also be staged in other cities like Pokhara, Chitwan, Biratnagar, and Dharan.

The play features a team of experienced actors. Sanam Kumar Bairag himself plays the role of Bhimsen Thapa, while other actors include Samantha Tamang, Suresh Shrestha, Gopal Basnet, and Sushan Gurung.

Bhimsen Thapa is not only a historical figure but also a name closely tied to Nepal’s national identity. This play, created with the intention of passing his contribution down to future generations, will be an important addition to Nepali theater.
