The trailer of the Nepali film ‘Mahabhoj’, slated for release on Jestha 15, has been made public.
The trailer, approximately four and a half minutes long, was launched on Sunday afternoon at QFX Cinema – Rising Mall in Kathmandu. During the event, the film unit introduced the media and audience to the contemporary social themes the film addresses.
The trailer depicts the emotional stories of victims entangled in the systemic issues of cooperative institutions. The main characters are portrayed by Dayahang Rai, Aryan Sigdel, Khagendra Lamichhane, Anjana Baraili, Malika Mahat, Gaumaya Gurung, Basundhara Bhusal, and Mohan Niraula.
Throughout the trailer, the tragedy of ordinary people who lost not only access to their deposits but also their lives due to failed cooperatives, the psychological stress of salaried employees, and the arrogance of politically influential manipulators are vividly portrayed.
Scenes of impoverished members whose deaths resulted from the inability to access their daily savings reveal the grave inequality within society. The trailer boldly exposes how individuals with access to cooperative institutions misuse their positions and power to spend public funds on personal luxuries. Toward the end of the trailer, a shot of a wall inscribed with “Truth never hides” indicates the film’s strong commitment to uncovering reality. A few days earlier, all cast members had shared the same status — “Truth never hides” — on their social media, building anticipation.
Director Dinesh Raut addressed the event, saying, “The misuse of cooperative funds in our society is not a recent phenomenon. We did not make this film simply because the issue is trending. The story is about how people in the upper strata of society use those in the lower strata to live a luxurious life. The cooperative issue is just one part of it.”
Producer Himal Kadariya added, “In this film, money isn’t the only lure. It was essential to tell a story born from within our own society. That’s how Mahabhoj was born.”
Written and scripted by Bikash Subedi, the film has been produced by Clock Work Creation and Picture Frame. The cast includes Aryan Sigdel, Dayahang Rai, Khagendra Lamichhane, Anjana Baraili, Gaumaya Gurung, Malika Mahat, Basundhara Bhusal, Mohan Niraula, Buddhi Tamang, Kamalmani Nepal, Pushkar Gurung, Binod Neupane, Abha Aryal, and Birendra Singh Kushwaha, among others.
