Salon Basnet, who rose to fame as a popular child artist and made his second innings as a hero with the film Hostel, is all set to make his debut as a producer with the upcoming film Rangi, which will be released this Friday, February 14.
He will be portraying the role of a father in the movie, produced under his own company, Sanvi Entertainment, which he started in the name of his daughter, Sanvika.
According to Salon, in the movie, the audience will see him playing the role of a struggling father. “I play the character of a food delivery person. The movie shows how much a father has to struggle to raise, educate, and take care of his daughter,” says Salon.
Salon revealed that he got the inspiration for the movie after watching a social media video of a food delivery person who met with an accident. “The video showed a person, possibly hit by a bus, and there was a crowd around him. People in the crowd were asking him to get in the bus and go to the hospital, but the food delivery person said, ‘My delivery is just 5 minutes away, I’ll finish this first and then go.’ That really touched me. He prioritized work over his life. After watching that video, I discussed the idea with director Suresh Nyaupane,” Salon recalls.
Salon claims that Rangi brings to light the story of something that is often ignored by the general public. “We see food delivery people every day on the streets, but we don’t pay much attention to them. We thought there could be a story behind their lives, and that is what we have brought to the screen in this film,” he adds.
After the birth of his daughter, Salon felt some changes in his life. “After my daughter was born, I felt the need to make a difference. Even if it’s just one step, I wanted to move forward. I always wondered how far I could go with acting, so I decided to step into film production. I realized that I needed to make films for the future of my daughter and myself,” says Salon. “I prefer films based on content. The character I wanted to portray is in Rangi. I hope the film will deliver a message to society along with great content.”
Salon also mentioned that the depth of character portrayal became easier for him after the birth of his daughter. “I had real-life experiences that are reflected in my character in the movie. Ayushi and Namrata helped a lot in establishing the character,” he says.
Salon revealed that the shooting of the film was delayed due to the absence of a suitable child artist for the lead role. “We searched for many girls, but we couldn’t find the right character. We had to postpone the shoot. Then, Sanoj Rasaili suggested Ayushi. We went to the set of the film she was working on, saw her performance, and after being impressed, we finalized her with her mother,” says Salon.
Salon states that he aims to represent society through Rangi. “The emotion of a father is often not visible. My father never showed me emotions. There is a global belief that fathers must be strong. But what does a father experience when he is alone, unable to show anything, and society tells him to do it all? That’s what Rangi is about. The movie tells how society perceives a father, whether things are going well or not,” Salon explains.
Directed by Suresh Nyaupane, Rangi stars Salon Basnet, Namrata Shrestha, Dilip Rayamajhi, Ayushi Dhakal, Uttam KC, Sumin Gurung, and Vishal Pahari in pivotal roles.
