Despite being the son of actor Sivakumar, Suriya shared in a recent interview with Pinkvilla that he had never considered acting as a career. Initially, he aspired to start his own company, but circumstances led him to acting to help pay off his mother’s ₹25,000 loan.
Suriya’s Early Career
Suriya recounted his early days working in the garment industry. As a trainee, he earned ₹750 for 15 days of work, and after three years, his monthly income reached ₹8,000. He dreamed of establishing his own company with his father’s investment of ₹1 crore. Acting was far from his plans.
However, everything changed when his mother, Lakshmi, revealed that she had taken a ₹25,000 loan without his father’s knowledge. Suriya explained, “Mom said that our bank balance had never been more than one lakh or one and a half lakh. Dad never insisted on his salary; he would just wait for it to come when it did. He hadn’t worked continuously for more than six months or ten months at that time.”
His Entry into Films
Although he was accustomed to receiving offers due to his father’s fame, it was the persistent request from Mani Ratnam’s production that prompted him to join the film industry. Suriya said, “I never thought I’d be in the film industry; I never wanted to face the camera or dreamt of becoming an actor. I came into the industry for the ₹25,000 to tell my mom, ‘Your loan is over, and you don’t have to worry.’ That’s how my career began.”
Suriya made his acting debut in the film Nerrukku Ner, released in 1997, which was directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam. The film starred Vijay in the lead role, with Kausalya and Simran as the female leads.
Upcoming Projects
Suriya is set to play a dual role in the upcoming film Kanguva, directed by Siva, which will hit theaters on November 14. The film also features Bobby Deol and Disha Patani.
