The Nepali film Anjila, which was released on Phagu Purnima (March 11), has now entered its fourth week in theaters. As its popularity continues to grow, the film has secured around 140 shows on the first day of its fourth week—almost double the number of shows it received on its opening day.
Anjila has also posed a challenge to the Indian superstar Salman Khan’s film Sikandar in Nepal. While Sikandar is performing well in India, it has struggled to attract audiences in Nepal. Theater owners have reported that Sikandar’s shows are running empty as Anjila remains the preferred choice of Nepali audiences.
This film is based on the life story of Nepali women’s national football team captain Anjila Tumbapo Subba, who has also played the lead role herself. To strengthen the film’s promotion, Subba has been engaging directly with audiences in various cities. She has visited Kathmandu, Dharan, Itahari, Jhapa, Biratnagar, Pokhara, Nepalgunj, and other places, personally inviting audiences to watch Anjila.
Anjila arrived in Nepal last Friday from Greece. She currently plays for the top-division women’s football club NIS Atromitos in Greece. Her visit is solely for the promotion of the film, and she will return to Greece after completing it.
The film portrays her journey from childhood to her struggles and achievements in football. Alongside Anjila, the cast includes Prem Kumar Shrestha, Sunil Thapa, Dayahang Rai, Bijay Baral, Sirjana Subba, Mao Tse Gurung, Sumin Gurung, Buddhi Tamang, and others.
