The film Basanta, which was released last Friday on Chaitra 22 (April 4), is receiving good word-of-mouth, according to its director and lead actor Prakash Saput. After visiting theatres to gauge audience reactions, Saput shared his joy upon hearing that many viewers had come to watch the film based on positive feedback and felt emotionally connected to the story.

“I’m hearing from audiences that the film is resonating with them. They are appreciating both the subject matter and its presentation,” said Saput. “Because the film is connecting with the audience, the word-of-mouth promotion is going strong.”

Some viewers noted that the film wasn’t as politically driven as they initially thought. “There were assumptions that Basanta might be politically motivated or supporting a specific party,” said one viewer, “but it’s not political at all. It’s a socially themed film with no space for doubt. You can watch it with full confidence.”

Audiences praised the film for highlighting real stories and experiences from Nepali society, calling it both thought-provoking and meaningful. They urged others to watch the film as well. “The beginning and ending were excellent. It surpassed my expectations,” said one viewer. “Both the acting and direction were commendable. I hope more films like this are made. Despite political controversy surrounding it, the film itself is not controversial.”

The film’s focus on social issues has been well received, with many viewers stressing that it’s a must-watch. “It tells a true story from Nepali society,” said one audience member. “The way it portrays village life is excellent.”

Director Saput shared that Basanta addresses various events from society and that different scenes impact viewers differently. Rather than emphasizing revolution or protest, the film seeks to show the current state of Nepali society. He explained that while there are moments of inequality, these are shown realistically, which is why the film has connected with audiences.

“Just like real life, the film includes moments of joy and sorrow,” he added.

Basanta, released simultaneously in Nepal and abroad, stars Prakash Saput, Swastima Khadka, Prabhat Pal Thakuri, Shri Shivansi, Urmila Lamgade, Khadka Bahadur Pun (Khabpu), Anup Baral, Kamalmani Nepal, Prakash Ghimire, and Bishal Pahari, among others.

Presented by Galbandi Productions, this social drama’s story, screenplay, and music were all created by director Saput himself. The film tells the story of a boy from an underprivileged Dalit (Bishwakarma) community who aspires to become a writer and the struggles he faces along the way.

Producers of the film include Mohan Bishwakarma and Bindu Bohora, with Anurodh Bhattarai, Nana Thakali, and Birendra Narayan Shrestha as executive producers. It is the directorial debut of singer and actor Prakash Saput, with cinematography by Susan Prajapati. The film is distributed by DCN in the Kathmandu Valley and FD Company outside the valley.
