In today’s digital age, devices like mobile phones, tablets, televisions, and computers have become toys for children. However, the excessive use of this technology has begun to have serious effects on them, leading to physical, mental, and emotional repercussions.
Family intimacy is weakening, the habit of giving children digital gadgets to keep them quiet, and the differences in the understanding of technology usage between children and parents are causing increased conflicts and distance within families. This is affecting children’s education, weakening social relationships, and there is a risk of losing sensitivity.
The Nepali film ‘Jhilko,’ set to be released on 19th of Baisakh, addresses this sensitive issue. Recently, its poster was released, which shows a schoolgirl holding a mobile phone, with the emotional face of an elderly man visible in the background. This hints at the film’s narrative, which explores the generational gap, technological addiction, and the family conflicts arising from it.
Technology itself is not bad, but its uncontrolled and careless use can have serious consequences on children’s future, family balance, and social health. This message is conveyed in the film, which portrays the journey of a girl dealing with digital addiction, as director Yadav Kumar Bhattarai explained. Previously, Bhattarai, who directed the historical and socially relevant film ‘Jhola,’ stated that the film aims to tell the story of the need for parents, teachers, policymakers, and the entire society to come together to protect children from digital addiction.
The film, produced under the banner of Media for Culture Pvt. Ltd., features performances by Aayushi Dhakal, Sunil Pokharel, Barsha Siwakoti, Bishal Pokharel, Bholaraj Sapkota, Janvi Basnet, Jenish Shrestha, and Jebish Shrestha. The cinematography is by Deepak Bajracharya, editing by Nimesh Shrestha, and the color and sound mixing is by Shyam Kunwar, with sound design by Uttam Neupane.
The story and screenplay of ‘Jhilko’ were developed by director Bhattarai in collaboration with Arun Dev Joshi and Dev Brat. The film is presented by Media for Culture Pvt. Ltd., with executive producers Umesh Paudel, producer Sushila Acharya, Ramgopal Thapa, and Kiran Kumar Acharya. It is a co-production with Janata TV.
