The film Jaar is scheduled for release on Baisakh 26. According to the production team, Jaar stands out due to its unique subject matter and presentation.
Jaar is based on a story from 225 years ago, touching on a practice that, although rare today, still exists in some forms. The film depicts real events that occurred in Nepali society during the 1800s and is adapted from a historical story by renowned writer Indra Bahadur Rai.
Indra Bahadur Rai captured the essence of the early 1800s in his literary work, which director Phurwa Chiring Lama has brought to life on screen. Lama stated that Jaar will not only reconnect audiences with history but also showcase traditions and social ties that are fading from contemporary life.
“This story has resonated with me since childhood,” Lama said. “Across Nepali-speaking communities worldwide, the emotions portrayed remain the same. Jaar highlights the innocence, lived experiences, and the once-prevalent practice of ‘Miteri’ (bonded friendship) in our society.”
Director Lama believes Jaar will profoundly impact younger generations, introducing them to an era that has largely been forgotten. “While today’s youth may be unaware of these traditions, Jaar bridges the gap between the past and the present, offering more than just a retelling of history—it reconnects us with our cultural roots,” he added.
Through a love story between the characters ‘Thuli’ and ‘Rudraman,’ Jaar portrays the complexities of societal structures and human emotions of that time. The film sheds light on social customs such as Miteri bonds, which are now little understood by younger audiences, helping modern viewers appreciate the deep connections that shaped earlier societies.
Produced by Fairy Tale Pictures, Jaar is described by Lama as a complete package despite its serious social theme, and he is confident it will resonate with audiences.
The film stars Saugat Malla, Anup Bikram Shahi, and actress Geetanjali Thapa in lead roles.
The project is a collaboration between Hope Reels, LA Seven Shorts, Baral Studio, and Kewa Production, with principal photography carried out in Sikkim.
The executive producers of Jaar are Trilochan Pandey, Neeraj Rai, Nursang Bhutia, Jyoti Kshetri, and Pema Rinzing Lepcha.
The film’s cinematography is by Saravanan Ilavarasu, editing by Akhilesh Rai, and music by Jhuma Limbu and Ganga Thapa.
Jaar will be released simultaneously in Nepal, India, and international markets.
In Nepal, Apple Entertainment, Reach Entertainment, and FD Company will handle the distribution, while Seven Seas Cinema will oversee international distribution.
