‘Jhilko’ Tackles Issues Hindering Social Progress

Focusing on serious problems within Nepali society, director Yadav Bhattarai previously made the films Jhola and Bhor.

Released about 14 years ago, Jhola was commercially successful. The film depicted the inhumane practice of Sati that once existed in Nepali society and was based on the short story Jhola by renowned author Krishna Dharabasi.

Following that, Bhattarai directed Bhor, which was based on the social realities of the Madhes region. It exposed the violence, domestic abuse, and social injustices women face due to the dowry system.

While Bhor carried a deep social message, it did not achieve commercial success. However, this setback motivated Bhattarai to work even more deeply on topics aimed at societal change. As a result, his third film Jhilko addresses the issue of today’s digital vices.

“Digital trends are distorting our lifestyle. People are drifting away from hard work and are getting lost in the virtual world,” says Bhattarai. “Jhilko portrays the impact of digital addiction on an ordinary family and its children.”

He adds, “Today, we consider digital addiction normal, but like a spark of fire, it is slowly burning away our souls. Jhilko highlights this danger.”

Director Bhattarai expresses his hope that Jhilko will inspire audiences to recognize their mistakes and adopt a more conscious way of living. “Cinema is a mirror and a guide for society,” Bhattarai says. “That’s why we felt it necessary to address such sensitive topics. Jhilko will connect deeply with you and your family’s realities.”

Jhilko is set to release nationwide on Baisakh 19 (early May). The film features actors Ayushi Dhakal, Bishal Pokharel, Barsha Siwakoti, Sunil Pokharel, and others.

The film is produced under the banner of Media for Culture Pvt. Ltd. Its cinematography is by Deepak Bajracharya, editing by Nimesh Shrestha, color grading and sound mixing by Shyam Kunwar, and sound design by Uttam Neupane.

The story and screenplay of Jhilko were written by Yadav Kumar Bhattarai in collaboration with Arun Dev Joshi and Dev Brat.

Umesh Paudel is the executive producer, while Sushila Acharya, Ramgopal Thapa, and Kiran Kumar Acharya are the producers.
The film has been made in collaboration with Janata TV.
