The Nepali film Mahabhoj, set to be released worldwide this Thursday (Jestha 15), is based on the story of ordinary people deceived by cooperative organizations. According to the film’s lead actor, Dayahang Rai, the movie portrays how institutions established with the beautiful dream of economic revolution were hijacked by corrupt intentions and selfish interests.

Dayahang says, “The establishment of cooperatives in Nepal was a noble effort to bring about an economic revolution. But those in power within these institutions have been misappropriating the people’s money—this is not a new problem but one that has existed for a long time.”

He adds that Mahabhoj is not just a narrative—it poses critical questions: Why is this happening? Whose ambitions lead to such consequences? The film seeks answers to these very questions.

Dayahang expressed his belief that the film will resonate not only with a certain percentage of viewers but with Nepalis around the world. “I won’t define it by numbers, but Mahabhoj will touch every Nepali—it’s the story of the common people,” he said.

The story of Mahabhoj revolves around the exploitation of public funds by individuals in cooperative institutions and the resulting class conflict, family, social, and moral crises. The film doesn’t just raise questions about financial exploitation but also about the power of money and the divisions it creates in Nepali society.

The film is directed by Dinesh Raut and produced by Himal Kadariya, with the story and screenplay written by Subedi. Mahabhoj is a joint production of Clock Work Creation and Picture Frame, and it is scheduled to be released simultaneously in Nepal and various countries abroad.

The cast includes Aryan Sigdel, Dayahang Rai, Khagendra Lamichhane, Anjana Baraili, Gaumaya Gurung, Malika Mahat, Basundhara Bhusal, Mohan Niraula, Buddhi Tamang, Kamalmani Nepal, Pushkar Gurung, Binod Neupane, Abha Aryal, and Birendra Singh Kushwaha.

Mahabhoj is a creative attempt to present the harsh realities of Nepali society on screen and amplify the voices of cooperative victims.
