Damannath Dhungana, Former Speaker and Senior Advocate Passes Away

Former Speaker of the Parliament, Damannath Dhungana, has passed away. He passed away at 2 PM today during treatment at Frontline Hospital, as confirmed by his nephew, Suraj Bhattrai.

He was being treated for liver-related issues at the hospital. Dhungana served as the Speaker of the Parliament from 1991 to 1994 (2048–2051) and was also a senior advocate.

He played a significant role in bringing the then-rebellious Maoists into the peace process.

Starting his political journey during the Panchayat era by forming a student organization, he became known as a senior advocate, human rights activist, and leader of civil society.

In 1971 (2028), Damannath Dhungana became the General Secretary of the Nepal Bar Association. He was also active in journalism and teaching.

After being elected as a Member of Parliament from Kathmandu in 1991 (2048), he became the Speaker. Following his defeat by Vidya Bhandari in the mid-term election of 1994 (2051), Dhungana became actively involved in the peace movement. He was also known as a facilitator for the peace talks between the government and the Maoists.
